Library Activities

The Association of Wives of State Assemblymen Perak (BAIDURI) led by its chairperson, Datin Seri Diraja Saripah Zulkifli, wife of Perak Menteri Besar, visited the Perak State Public Library during its two-day programme of activities one recent weekend, to create awareness among parents on the importance of instilling the reading habit in children.

Speaking to the press, Saripah said, “Adults can also benefit from programmes organised by libraries. We urge everyone to come to the library. This is not only a place to read, but also a good venue to seek information. Besides lending moral support, we are looking closely at how we can implement some of these activities at smaller libraries in the state.”

Saripah felt that the visit provided her the opportunity to get close to the people. She added that members of BAIDURI and other non-governmental organisations could also participate in certain events to pick up new skills, such as the Firewall programme.

Aktiviti@perpustakaan is an annual two-day event for children and adults alike, to cultivate the love for reading. According to library director, Cik Nor Aini Mohd Nordin, adults should be more aware of their responsibility to instil the reading habit in their children. “It’s up to parents to control the contents that children consume, particularly over the Internet.” She hoped non-governmental organisations would partner with the library to run programmes for their members or the public.

Activities carried out during the two-day event included colouring and spelling contests for children. Some 20 booths, manned by governmental agencies and the private sector, were established to promote their respective products.
