Ipoh Student Wins International Writing Contest

Angie Lee Xiao Fong, a Senior 2 student at Poi Lam High School, Ipoh is among the top three winners in the writing category at the 2015 International Youth Food Culture Contest. Top winners in both the writing and art categories in this year’s contest were announced recently.

International Youth Food Culture Contest is an annual writing and art contest for middle and high school students with a particular focus on food. Every participating student submits a piece of writing or art work focusing on a food related topic, and winners are selected based on the originality of their work as well as the depth of their ideas.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their writing and art skills while exploring their passions and thoughts about food,” says Chris Wang, founder and chair of the contest organizing committee. “This year we have received entries from students in North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa, sharing their reflections on the role of food in life and culture and expressing their thoughts on contributing to a healthier food environment. We are truly grateful that this contest has connected so many around the world in such a positive way.”

In her winning piece “When I Think of Food”, Angie writes about the diversity and uniqueness of the food culture in Malaysia, and reflects on her personal experience on how, through cooking, her parents instilled love and values in her. Through such reflection, she expresses her heartfelt appreciation for her parents and conveys her strong love for the food culture of Malaysia.

International Youth Food Culture Contest is organised by Youth Food, a non-profit youth organization in California, United States, with the support of food experts and enthusiasts from around the world. Details of the contest can be found at: www.Youth-Food.org.
