Easing Flood Victims’ Woes

When news and pictures of the flood situation inundated their hand phones, members of the Perak Women for Women Society (PWW) went into action. They immediately organised an ad hoc donation drive.

Messages were forwarded and calls were made to members and well-wishers asking for contributions in kind. In less than 12 hours foodstuffs, clothing, sarongs, diapers, infant food, sanitary items, canned food, mineral water, bed sheets, comforters, and more were dropped in at the society’s office along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Ipoh. The items were then separated, placed in boxes and labelled.

On Saturday, December 26, the boxes were delivered to the collection centre in Greentown while some were sent to the victims in Jalong and Felda Lasah, Sg Siput. While at Felda Lasah, members helped to distribute food and clothing direct to the victims and saw firsthand the fast-flowing river which had overflowed its banks due to heavy rain.

The society did its best to bring some comfort to the victims who are still in need of assistance from well-meaning Malaysians.

“This is not the end of our altruistic efforts,” said society president, Halida Mohd Ali. “More will be done in the days to come.”
