A Timely Recognition

Outgoing President of Ipoh-based Perak Women for Women Society (PWW), Halida binte Mohamad Ali, was among the 11 recipients of the Iron Lady Awards 2016. The presentation ceremony was held at the concourse of Aeon Metro Prima Shopping Complex, Kepong on Sunday, March 13 in conjunction with the annual Women Street Crime Awareness Campaign initiated by the Road Safety Marshall Club.

This is the third annual award ceremony which began in 2013. The Iron Lady Award is to recognise women who have contributed selflessly, in whatever ways, to society, especially in the empowerment and liberation of women, per se.

The 11 recipients come with diverse backgrounds, ranging from housewives to businesswomen to policewomen. Each has her own stories and achievements to relate.

Perak Women for Women Society has been in the forefront of women’s affairs in Perak since its formation in 2003. The society’s forte is in tackling issues relating to domestic violence and spousal abuse. It has carved a name for itself and is well known throughout the state,  the result of the cumulative efforts of individual members of the society. Halida has been with the society since 2008 and became president in 2014.

Incidentally, two other members of PWW were similarly recognised for their work thus making Halida the third recipient of the august award. The two previous winners were Dr Sharifah Halimah Jaffar (2013) and Yip Siew Keen (2014).

The awards were presented by Dato’ Seri SK Devamany, the Perak State Legislative Assembly Speaker. Present at the ceremony were Capt Balasupramaniam, founder and president of the Road Safety Marshall Club and his able assistants. Popular singer cum entertainer, Zamil Idris emceed the event. His rendition of Josh Groben’s “You Raise Me Up” was a fitting tribute to all the ladies present among the 500-odd audience.
