Classic Cars Converge

Over 50 top classic cars with their drivers dressed in head-turning pilot gear converged at the Perak Stadium carpark on Sunday, February 28.

According to the organising chairman, KT Pillai, vehicles of year 1945 and below are classified as “vintage”. Cars of 21 years and below are considered as “modern classic” while those of 100 years and above are tagged as “antique”.

During the gathering, which saw the presence of the Malaysia-Singapore Vintage Car Register (Northern and Central) and the Perak Classic Car Club, Ipoh Echo spoke with some of the classic car owners.

When asked on how he maintained his 1945 Austin 8 Tourer, this was what 60-year-old Stanley Yeong from Kuala Lumpur said, “I send it for regular servicing and replace parts when needed. Nowadays, with the Internet, it is quite easy to obtain parts by ordering it from overseas.”

Penang-born Lawrence Lau who grew up in Ipoh has a 1954 MG TF 1250, which was featured in a Petronas advertisement. “I’ve a lot of good times with this car. I raced it at Batu Tiga. I got interested in cars due to my passion in racing,” said Lawrence. He used to own a Porsche 356 B which won him a lot of races. He sold it because it was a left-hand drive.

Present at the get-together was Yap Kwai Wah, President of the Perak Classic Car Club.

Among the spectators, who made full use of the photographic opportunities, was a 68-year-old retired businessman. “This is my first time here with my daughter. It reminds me of the good old days. I truly admire the owners who keep their prized possessions in tip-top condition,” he said.
