For the Love of Hockey

Ipoh Lads Hockey Club, together with Shaheen Sports Club hailing from Hong Kong and Ipoh Bug, held its annual junior hockey tournaments with a charity twist from July 24 to 28. The week culminated with a telematch with fifteen kids from the Good Shepherd Family Home.

“Shaheen Sports Club, an NGO, was formed in 1982 for men’s, ladies’ and youth hockey players. We train them as athletes and we are the only hockey club in Hong Kong that develops coaches and umpires. We gather their parents and together form a Shaheen voluntary caring group which visits old age homes, cleans up the beaches and others. Shaheen denotes eagle,” Ahmed Khan, the vice president of Shaheen Sports Club cum founder of Action Sports Foundation, explained to Ipoh Echo. For the past six years, Ipoh Lads Hockey Club has been collaborating with Shaheen Sports Club for charity work and hockey development in the state. The national-level Action Sports Foundation Trophy is conducted somewhere in November every year in the state with about 108 schools participating from the age of 12, 14 and 16.

What keeps them doing what they are doing? “We all love hockey! We have passion in sports because sports can bring all of us together to nurture the next generation as well as to help the underprivileged,” 61-year-old Khan, an avid fan of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup International Hockey Tournament, enthused.

Present were Jasbir Nannuan, the president of Ipoh Lads Hockey Club and Sharan Kumar, the secretary of Ipoh Lads Hockey Club.

Formed in 2009 by a group of ex-state players, Ipoh Lads Hockey Club has three groups of members in the club: juniors (under 18), seniors (19-39 years old) and veterans (age 40 and above). The junior development programme includes coaching clinics by ex-coaches, former international and state players. To date, the club has about 100 members.
