Some 76 special education students have gained entry into the Malaysia Book of Records by baking the country’s longest cake. The record was created during the National Special Education Skills Carnival 2018 held from October 22 to 24 at Tower Regency Hotel Ipoh.
Aged between 13 and 17, the pupils decorated the 50.2m-long cake shaped like the Perak state flag.
Aznan Alias, Perak Education Department’s Head of Private and Special Education cum organising chairman said that it was the 8th such record set by the department’s special education unit.
“We’ve been creating records since 2011. As Perak is the carnival’s host this year, we’ve roped in the students. This is one way to highlight these special kids’ hidden talents to the community. They can perform as well as any normal student,” he explained.
Dr Abdul Aziz Bari, Executive Councillor for Education, Science, Environment, Green Technology and Information said that the state government was supportive of developmental programmes for special education students such as these.
“Their talents get to be honed to a level unattainable even by normal students. I’ve seen them performing. They do have hidden talents,” he said.
According to Aziz, efforts and sacrifices by the special education class teachers in creating capable students should be acknowledged. “These teachers have worked really hard,” he stated.
Malaysia Book of Records Executive Officer for General Administration, Siti Hajar presented the book’s certificate of recognition to Aznan Alias, witnessed by the executive councillor.
