Overhead Bridge to Be Repaired

The pedestrian overhead bridge across Jalan Raja Ashman (formerly Jalan Hospital) is in the news for the wrong reason.

According to a media statement by Ipoh City Council, the gaping crack at the top end of a supporting pillar was caused by a low-loader belonging to Mangkubumi, a contractual company doing repair works in the city. The crane-carrying vehicle graced the base of the pillar some two weeks ago causing the pillar to shift a few inches from its original position.

Ipoh City Council assured pedestrians and motorists that the bridge is safe for use and to pass underneath for the moment. This was confirmed by Abdul Yunus Jamahari, the Executive Councillor for Public Utility and Infrastructure who was at the site on Thursday, December 20.

Tests by specialists from UTP and HS Geoconsult are on-going. The tests, which began on Wednesday, December 19, will last two weeks.

Repairs by Mangkubumi, the responsible party, will commence once the green light is given by the consultants.
