Roti 1Malaysia, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established in 2011, collects and distributes surplus bread and pastries from hotels and bakeries to over 80 welfare homes in Klang Valley and Sabah from Monday to Friday. Committee members made their second visit to Persatuan DAYBREAK, Ipoh on Friday, August 11 bringing treats and cheers to the trainees.
“Every year we’ll spread out. This year, we visit Ipoh. Today, we bring freshly-made croissants and muffins from donor hotels in Genting,” Dato’ Anne Eu, founder and chairman of Roti 1Malaysia said.
“We’re a group of people who share the same vision of wanting to do a little bit for society and touch lives,” Anne added.
“We’re very honoured that Roti 1Malaysia came all the way from KL to share their gifts and encouragement. Its members are very impressed by the work we do here. Our disabled has so many skills and can do different types of jobs. We’ll be working closer together in future,” said Puan Sri Dato’ Sandra Lee, founder of Persatuan DAYBREAK to Ipoh Echo.
“Roti 1Malaysia’s efforts to share good quality breads and pastries, through partnerships with the hospitality industry, have gone a long way towards helping underprivileged communities,” Lee Nyit Kean, chairman of Persatuan DAYBREAK stated.
Present were Puan Sri Cecilia Lim, deputy chairman of Roti 1Malaysia and Michael Fernando, general manager of Persatuan DAYBREAK.
The committee was presented with a bouquet of handmade flowers crafted by the trainees. The meeting hall was abuzz with squeals of delight coming from trainees and visitors alike.
“I was involved in the making of the flower bouquets for the committees. There were so many colours such as red and yellow,” Suet Fun, a 20-year-old trainee shared with Ipoh Echo.
Committee members bought a wide range of handicraft items made by the trainees.
Persatuan DAYBREAK, formed in 1992, aims at empowering those with disabilities to become self-reliant, independent and integrated members of society. Since inception, it has provided vocational training to over a thousand people with disabilities in Perak. Last year it found employment for seven trainees.
Currently, Persatuan DAYBREAK has 40 full-time trainees, ranging in age from 20 to over 30 years old. Over 30 students from special education schools come for training at the centre daily.
