Showcasing Malay Heritage

By Rosli Mansor

Some 2000 people thronged the ‘Santai Tanjak’ programme by the Perak Bumiputera Tourism Operators’ Association held in conjunction with Malaysia Day on Monday, September 16. The momentous event was staged at Kellie’s Castle, Batu Gajah with the expressed objective of showcasing traditional Malay heritage.

Association Chairman, Zamari Muhyi said that the wearing of ‘tanjak’ (Malay male headgear) was common during the golden era of the Malacca Sultanate (circa 1400s).

“I hope the programme will help restore our past glory,” he said. “Making the headgear requires a certain level of skill. The craft will be a boon for our tourism sector, as it’s something new for foreign visitors.”

Activities such as ‘bertanjak’ photography, silat demonstration and archery were held to enliven the day-long programme.

Traditional Malay games, such as congkak and gasing were organised to make the event more colourful.
