Tengu and the Uchiwa Boy

The Anderson School Japanese Language Club is building up the excitement with an upcoming charity school play titled, “Tengu and the Uchiwa Boy” after the acclaimed “Momotaro” (The Peach Boy) staged last year.

“This is our second time to present such a programme with the objective of providing a better and more conducive environment for students to learn the language. Proceeds from last year’s show went to the establishment of a Japanese-book reading corner. This year, they’ll be earmarked for the upgrading of facilities such as the purchase of an interactive projector for the Japanese Language Room,” said Loh Kok Hoong, the drama director and head of the Japanese language panel.

“And we’re glad to have Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad to be our main sponsor this year,” Loh told Ipoh Echo. The Anderson School Japanese Language Club was incepted in 2013.

To be held in the school hall on Saturday, July 22 (7.45pm) and Sunday, July 23 (3pm), tickets are priced at RM20 for normal seats and RM50 for front seats. Involving students from 14 to 18 years of age, it will be performed in English with a live musical ensemble and choir. Interested readers can call 012 458 6117 for enquiries.

It tells the story of Hanemaru, an ordinary boy living in a small village, who accidentally discovers the magical power of an uchiwa (traditional Japanese fan) that his family has passed down the generations.

Hanemaru soon finds himself in trouble with creatures that everyone is afraid of – Tengu – a bird-like goblin believed to be the guardian of mountains, who possesses supernatural powers. Little does the boy know that the group of Tengu is plotting a secret plan after learning about his magical uchiwa.
