Twinning in Brains and Beauty

It was double joy as 25-year-old identical twins, Olivia Constance Nicholas and Olinda Josephine Nicholas, were called to the Bar at the High Court in Ipoh on Wednesday, March 29.

Ipoh Echo spoke to the adorable duo who can finish each other’s sentences.

In October last year, Olivia represented Malaysia for the Miss International 2016 pageant in Tokyo, Japan. “It was amazing as I got to compete against 69 countries around the world. The girls were lovely and we got to exchange cultural vignettes. The most significant event after that is being called to the Bar together with my twin sister, it’s very rare and we managed to do it! It’s a memorable day,” she told Ipoh Echo. A big fan of fashion, her go-to look is something that is both chic and elegant.

The beauty queen’s latest involvement in charity included the distribution of food to the indigenous people in Kampung Landap. “Juggling my modeling and legal career, it has been hectic but enjoyable because of my parents’ and sister’s support all the way. Now I want to concentrate on my legal career and start practising in KL,” Olivia said.

Here’s Olivia one precious advice for all the girls out there: “You can always do two things at a time. Multitasking is never impossible.”

Their father, Dato’ Fredrick Indran Nicholas, has just been promoted as a High Court judge of Fiji. He was a former Penang industrial court chairman.

Alumni of SMK Convent Ipoh, the twins obtained their Bachelors of Laws from the Multimedia University in Malacca. Still they love coming back to Ipoh for the food. Olivia named bean sprouts chicken as her favourite Ipoh food while Olinda cited chee cheong fun (steamed rice noodle rolls).

Meanwhile, Olinda will be joining a criminal law firm in Ipoh. “We love wearing the same clothes till today. Olivia is very much into pageantry and does fashion on a big scale. For me, I like reading and ballet dancing. My favourite author would be Robin Sharma of the book, ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’. I like to read law books too,” she shared.

“My Dad and Mum have been my strength. They have been very strict and molded us into the persons we are today. My source of inspiration is my Dad,” she added.

Olinda’s advice provided the best conclusion to the interview: “Never be discouraged by criticisms. Take it as an encouragement to grow. Girls should always have an education to be independent.”

During a subsequent celebration at the Royal Ipoh Club, there was a Sherry toast, a past tradition of the Bar, to wish the twins all the best in their legal careers.

Nalini, retired headmistress of SMK Convent Ipoh stated, “What I remember distinctly about them is that they wore spotlessly clean shoes every day of the week. Hair neatly-tied up with matching ribbons. A good spread of talcum on their faces. Meticulously-pressed pinafores with beautiful smiles to melt any heart. They were always punctual to school. According to the teachers who taught them, they were cheerful and participated actively in classroom discussions. Besides, they volunteered to lead class presentations as they were confident and very fluent in spoken and written English.”

Ipoh Echo wishes them the very best in all their future undertakings.
