The Malaysian team lost 2-3 to Iran at the final of the 3rd Men’s Asia Indoor Hockey Tournament which was held at the Indera Mulia Stadium. This was the 3rd final in 3 years that Malaysia had lost consecutively to Iran.
The first goal of the match was scored by Malaysia’s S. Kuhan in the 4th minute. However Iran’s Bahrami Yaghoub equalized at the 12th minute.
In the 2nd half, Iran put in 2 goals by Norouzzad Reza and Abbasi Reza at the 30th and 37th minutes. This got Malaysia fighting back and came back with 1 goal by S. Kuhan at the 37th minute but it was too late and Malaysia went down to Iran 2-3.
Perak Hockey Association President, Dato’ Abdul Rahim, described Malaysia’s narrow loss to Iran as “very disappointing”, erasing the opportunity to represent Asia at the forthcoming indoor hockey World Cup Finals to be held at Ponzan, Poland, in February 8-13 next year. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) had designated that the winner of this Asian championship would represent Asia at the World Finals.
Rahim however, envisaged that the standard of play will be improved from next year onwards, explaining that the introduction of the National Indoor Hockey Tournament this year will see all states developing their national indoor hockey teams. The players for this Asian Championship were selected from the 1st National Tournament which was held last month. “Additionally the fully sponsored Malaysian Sports Council (MSC) under-16 tournament will be another source of future talent”, added Rahim.
MSC will be holding their second under-16 Indoor Hockey Tournament in November this year in Kuala Lumpur.
