Time-control was 20 minutes, to ensure that the tournament could be completed within a day. There were a total of seven rounds.
There were five categories: Under-12, Under-15, Under-18, Veteran and Open. Trophies were presented to all winners, while the top ten players in the Open category walked away with cash prizes, additionally.
The winner of the Open category was Sumant Subramanian, 19, from Cameron Highlands. His father and two younger siblings, Shreyes and Sarika, were also among the top ten finishers in the tournament.
According to Perak International Chess Association (PICA) President, Ir. Chan Swee Loon, chess tournaments are held regularly throughout the year to promote and to instil interest in children and to create opportunities for them to play at competition level. He hoped that through these efforts, new talents would be uncovered.
