The HST Ipoh Badminton Tournament 2013 was announced recently by its organising Chairman, Dr Lee Boon Chye, Member of Parliament for Gopeng. The objective of this tournament is to instil the love for the sport among the young besides unearthing new talents. After all, badminton is one of Malaysia’s national sports and it has produced world champions.
There are ten categories: Men’s Novice Doubles, Junior and Senior Veteran Doubles, Ladies Novice Doubles, Mixed Novice Doubles, Boy Singles 18, 15 and 12, and Boy Doubles 15 and 12.
Although the tournament caters for all ages and races, the junior categories are open to players from around Malaysia. However, the senior categories are open to Perakeans only. Former and current national players under Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and state players (SUKMA / Junior Circuit) are not allowed to participate in the Men’s Novice Doubles.
The Champion for each category will receive cash prizes of between RM400 and RM800, and a Protech-sponsored badminton racquet and racquet bag worth RM299. The first runner-up in each category will also be awarded prizes.
All participants will be eligible for the lucky draw, where attractive badminton-based prizes are up for grabs.
This inaugural tournament will be held from Aug 16 to 18 at the HST Ipoh Badminton Arena, Ipoh’s largest badminton arena, with 22 courts. The organisers have lined-up some badminton stars for the opening ceremony, including Hafiz Hashim and Tan Kim Her. A badminton legend is also set to make an appearance. His identity will be revealed in due time.
Registration fee is RM50 for doubles and RM25 for singles. Those who register will receive a sponsored T-shirt. As this is a non-profit tournament, fees received will go towards the cash prizes for winners. Registration closes on July 31.
