The Youth Camp and Exchange programme in Lions Club International is an exciting programme for youths designed for maximum experience that include staying with hosting families and getting first hand cultural exchange.

Ten Japanese and one Finnish Youth Exchange students arrived in Malaysia recently under District 308B2. Six Japanese and 1 Finnish student were hosted by families in Ipoh under Region 3 and 4 while the rest were hosted in Penang under Region 1 and 2. The students were taken to various places of interest, tasted different types of cuisines and witnessed the diverse and rich culture that is Malaysia. It was indeed an eye opening session for the Youth Exchange students who were exposed to the Malaysian culture and heritage for the first time. Though some found the smell of the durians repugnant, the brave ones tried, only to spit out later.

After a period of 11 days, it was time to leave. The District Chairperson for Youth Exchange organised a Farewell and Cultural Night for the students, hosting families, hosting clubs, invited guests and Lions. The Past District Governor, Tan Swee Kok was present to grace the occasion. Also present were the Region 4 Chairperson, Lion Lim Hong Lian, Zone 12 Chairperson, Lion Jimmy Leong and District Chairperson for Youth Exchange Region 5, Lion Royce Ng.

The support was overwhelming and the Japanese students sang Rasa Sayang and Doraemon. It was a night of camaraderie as the culture of the three countries blended and bonded. It was also a night where feelings of gratitude were expressed unashamedly and tears flowed freely. It was truly a night to remember.
