Wedded to the Violin

The Greentown Indian Cultural Society hosted a musical event recently titled, “Wedded to the Violin”. It was a violin solo by Viidushi A. Kanyakumari from Chennai, India and was held at the ballroom of Impiana Hotel, Ipoh. Accompanying her were Vidwan Prasad, Vidwan Amrit and Vidwan Anand from Mumbai and Chennai, respectively. Some 280 Indian classical music lovers attended the Ipoh show.

Viidushi A. Kanyakumari is an internationally renowned Carnatic violinist. She is also an innovator and organiser of Carnatic instrumental ensembles. Her extensive experience, spanning over four decades, has earned her an enviable place in the field of classical Indian music.

She is the first female violinist to have performed non-stop for 29 hours in 1988. Among the awards she has won over the years are, Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu; Ugadi Puraskar from the Government of Andhra Pradesh; TTK Award from the Music Academy, Chennai.

“The success of this show is a boost for the image of our society, as it’s one of the top-notch events organised since its formation ten years ago,” said society president, Subian Singam, to Ipoh Echo.

The society plans on hosting more high-calibre shows for the benefit of Indian music lovers in the city.
