Former badminton great Dato’ Ng Boon Bee launched the inaugural Ipoh Swimming Club Inter-Club Badminton Tournament 2011 with the coveted Dato’ Ng Boon Bee Cup as the challenge trophy, after the opening of Ipoh Swimming Club’s newly-refurbished badminton hall with the addition of two new courts, recently. The other guest of honour at the opening ceremony was Dato’ Seri Dr Abdullah Fadzil Che Wan, former president of Badminton Association Malaysia.
Dato’ Ng was a three-time All-England Doubles Champion in 1965, 1966 and 1970, and was one of the members of the team that won the Thomas Cup in 1967. He was voted Sportsman of the Year in 1968. Besides badminton, he also excelled in football and rugby. Dato’ Ng was inducted into the World Badminton Hall of Fame in 1998.
