Cheered on by a boisterous crowd of racing enthusiasts at the Perak Turf Club, Ipoh, jockey Jose de Souza rode home horse No. 2 Good Baby to win the Coronation Cup that carried a purse of RM300,000 and a golden challenge trophy.
Raced over a distance of 1,600 metres on soft turf, Good Baby, from Golden Knight Stable and trained by Ooi Chin Chin, was two lengths ahead of its closest rival.
The most prestigious annual classic race for Class 1 Malaysian thoroughbreds aged three and older, was held on Sunday, November 23. It was inaugurated in 1985 to commemorate the installation of the late HRH Sultan Azlan Shah as the Sultan of Perak.
Earlier in the day, the Perak Turf Club Charity Cup Race was won by Littlebitofjoy from Mas Stable and trained by Edylyn Goh. Winning by half a length, it was apprentice jockey Amirul Ismadi’s biggest win in his two-year career.
The Charity Cup, inaugurated in 1998, is raced over a 1,800-metre distance. It comes with a prize money of RM125,000 and carries a winner’s trophy.
As with the Club’s long-standing tradition, following the completion of the races, donations were distributed to non-governmental organisations in Perak, as part of its annual outreach programme for the needy.
This year, cheques amounting to RM193,000 were presented by Deputy Chairman of PTC Dato’ Cheah Choon King to 51 beneficiaries. They included Persatuan Pemulihan Sultan Azlan Shah, Perak Society for the Promotion of Mental Health, Noah’s Ark, Red Crescent Society (Perak), Vision Home, and ISPCA.
The Perak Turf Club, besides assisting charitable organisations and NGOs in the state, also responds to disasters at home and abroad, as well as lending a helping hand to deserving individuals.
