PCSH Reaches Out To Underprivileged Communities

The Orang Asli community and other low-income groups living in rural areas will receive free medical treatment and medicines again through the Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH) Mobile Health Clinic this year.

State Health Committee Chairman Dato’ Dr Mah Hang Soon said the initiative was an effort to help the rural community to gain medical care and treatment. “More private organisations, especially health institutions should organise similar efforts for the benefit of the community in remote areas,” he said after the launching of PCSH Mobile Health Clinic at Kg. Ulu Groh, Gopeng.

PCSH Chief Executive Officer, Rajindar Singh, said the project featured doctors and nurses providing free medical consultation, medicines and health screenings such as blood pressure, blood glucose, diet counselling and body mass index.

Rajindar said this is the second time that PCSH is conducting the project after a successful run last year.  Villagers who were found in need of further medical attention would then be brought to the PCSH for screening and treatment. “For example, we encountered a 29-year-old woman suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, who lost the use of both her legs last year. We have given her free treatment, including prostheses.”

The Mobile Health Clinic was funded by CIMB Foundation. Present at the launching were State Health Committee Chairman, Dato’ Dr Mah Hang Soon; The Perak Chinese Maternity Association President. Dato’ Lee Hau Hian; PCSH Chief Executive Office, Rajindar Singh and Jalan Raja Permaisuri Bainun CIMB Bank branch manager, Teng Tuck Oon.

PCSH Oscar Night

Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH)At the annual dinner of Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH) with the theme “Oscar Night”, the Board of Directors, management, doctors, nurses and staff were dressed to impress. The dinner function held at Impiana Hotel Ipoh on Saturday, September 8 was to recognise the contributions of staff for the past year and to reward them.

In his opening address, Dato’ Lee Hau Hian, President of The Perak Chinese Maternity Association which owns PCSH, shared with guests the challenges faced. As a non-profit community association, the hospital used to provide free medical healthcare but this is no longer possible today.

Therefore, the Board and management have to redefine their social mission and see what vision PCSH can carry for the next hundred years. In this journey of rediscovery, a new business model has to be adopted, but still with the aim of providing affordable, quality healthcare.

Dato’ Lee believed PCSH would soon have a new concept and facilities in place, forging new alliances, to build the hospital as an ultimate medical institution. Besides an eye hospital in the pipeline, PCSH aims to be a multi-functional and multi-disciplinary hospital. He also called upon PCSH committee members to take on leadership roles.

At the function, long serving employees with 10, 15 and 25 years behind them, were recognised and rewarded. Prizes were also presented to the best dressed male and female guests.

In line with the night’s theme, a special comedy movie entitled “The Tale of Sinde Rella”, was screened. It was a production by staff of PCSH. Guests were also entertained with music and energetic dance performances throughout the night, interspersed with games and lucky draws.

World Nurses’ Day - Perak Community Specialist HospitalWorld Nurses’ Day is celebrated worldwide on May 12 of each year. In Ipoh the auspicious occasion was marked with an official visit by Datin Seri DiRaja Saripah Zulkifli, wife of the Chief Minister to the Perak Community Specialist Hospital located at Jalan Kampar, Ipoh.

She then attended a cake-cutting ceremony in honour of nurses of the hospital.

“The responsibilities of a nurse are heavy,” she said. “Some may consider the profession tedious and unrewarding, especially our youths who are very choosy. But without them where would we be?”

Caroline Teoh, a senior nurse with the hospital, prided herself for having chosen the profession. She has been a nurse for over 30 years. “My happiness is to see my patients recovering and walking out of the hospital, healthy once more,” she exclaimed.
