It was a proud moment for 118 graduates of Sunway College Ipoh when they received their scrolls during the college’s  graduation ceremony on Tuesday, September 2.

The fifth cohort of graduating students were presented with scrolls for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Certified Accounting Technician, Diploma in Business Administration, Diploma in Marketing, Diploma in Business Information System, Diploma in Graphic Design and Diploma in Interior Design.

Forty seven of them received scholarships amounting to RM45,000 during the course of their study at the college.

Kok Ying Fan was honoured with an award for being the top five affiliates with a second placing in Malaysia for the June 2012 ACCA examination.

The ceremony was attended by family members and friends of the graduates. The Executive Member of the Sunway Group, Puan Sri Dr Susan Cheah, Senior Executive Director of Sunway Education Group, Elizabeth Lee, Sunway College Ipoh Chief Executive Cheng Mien Wee, Principal Adawiah Norli, and college staff were in attendance.

Dr Muhammad Amin Zakaria, Executive Councillor for Education, Science, Environmental and Green Technology graced the occasion. “We welcome the private sector to invest in education in Perak. Areas earmarked as education hubs include Kinta Valley, Seri Iskandar and Taiping,” said Muhammad in his opening remarks.

Top performer, Chai Xin Wei, 23, a Diploma in Marketing graduate, delivered the valedictory speech. She congratulated her fellow graduates and thanked the lecturers for their patience and support.

In conjunction with the graduation ceremony, the college organised an education and career fair for the students to initiate their career placement.

Sunway College Ipoh, with a current enrolment of 400 students, was established in 2004. It recently launched the Foundation in Arts Pre-University Programme, an alternative fast track pathway to pursue a degree course at Sunway University.

The college, under the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, gives out scholarships or grants tuition waivers to deserving students, based on their financial background or on merit.

Sunway Scholarships for the Poor

Sunway College, Ipoh has entrusted One Caring Heart Malaysia to fulfil the mission of Education Initiative Charity through the allocation of scholarships for children of single mothers and poor families.

Sunway Scholarships for the PoorThe scholarship of RM200,000 was presented by the Principal of Sunway College, Ipoh – Pn. Adawiah Norli to the President of One Caring Heart Malaysia – Puan Sri Dr Susan Cheah.

Sunway College, Ipoh in awarding the scholarships, is fulfilling its corporate social responsibility, in tune with the philosophy of Sunway-Jeffrey Cheah’s foundation of giving back to society.

The event was officiated by Yang Bahagia Datuk Heng Seai Kie, Advisor of Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. In her speech, Datuk Heng highlighted that the programme is of great benefit to those single mothers and poor families as the scholarships will tend to lessen their financial burden.

Sunway College Ipoh offers a variety of courses for tertiary education. The latest partnership between Sunway College, Ipoh & One Caring Heart Malaysia is aimed at providing quality tertiary education and being socially responsible at the same time.

Telematch For Students

ipoh echo issue 142, Sunway College IpohWhat a fun morning it was when students from Sunway College Ipoh got together at the YMCA field recently, to participate in a friendly telematch against members of IpohBUG, a local sports club. It was organised by students from the college’s School of Business and Marketing.

The objective of the telematch was to create an outdoor activity for students of the faculty; to take them away from their books for just one morning. According to the President of the Business and Marketing Club, Clement Heng, they planned on holding an outdoor sporting activity once a month, where youth games would be played, including basketball and football.

It was an opportunity to foster new friendship among the youngsters. Everyone enjoyed themselves, playing games such as “sweet picking”, “plug-the-holes”, seven-a-side Frisbee and three-legged football.

Food hampers were later presented to the two teams, as a token of fellowship since there was no winner or loser.

Sunway College Ipoh (SYCI) was established by Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah to cater to students in the northern regions of Malaysia . The college is located at Sunway City Ipoh, which is only a few kilometres south of Ipoh. Sunway College Ipoh recently held their Convocation Ceremony which saw 108 graduates receiving their certificates.

On hand to present the graduates their certificates was Guest of Honour Puan Sri Datin (Dr.) Susan Cheah together with Sunway University College Director Elizabeth Lee and Director of Sunway College Ipoh Mr. Paul Tan.

Sri Yosephin, an Indonesian, was 1 of 12 students who received her diploma in Graphic Design. She was also the valedictorian of the college. In her valedictory (farewell) speech she described studying at Sunway College Ipoh as being “very nice” where she enjoyed the fresh air and made many good friends.

Among the graduates were 9 students who were Tuition Fee Waiver recipients who also passed with flying colours. The Tuition Fee Waiver programme is part of the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah scholarship programme which provides a quality education for bright and deserving students.

Sunway College Ipoh is currently one of the leading private colleges in the northern region of Malaysia whose philosophy of learning goes beyond academic boundaries but also enhances the positive attributes of students.

Sunway College was founded in 1987 and was upgraded to Sunway University College in 2004 by the Malaysia Ministry of Education. The college in Ipoh was set up in 2003. On December 16 of last year, its Founder, Chairman and Chancellor, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah received the official letter from Dato’ Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin, Minister of Higher Education, Malaysia, upgrading it to a full-fledged University.

Sunway’s International Cultural & Prom Night

Sunway College Ipoh (SyCI), a premier private college in the city, celebrated its International Cultural and Prom Night with a glamorous dinner celebration at a local hotel recently. The ‘International Cultural & Prom Night’, was a team effort by staff advisors and the Students’ Council.

The “International Cultural” element is meant to reflect the present and continuing composition of SyCI students’ population, which will contribute positively towards the globalization of their students’ perspectives.

As the staff, industry partners, students and alumni came together to celebrate the occasion, Sunway College Ipoh Director, Mr. Paul Tan took this opportunity to express his sincere gratitude to the Students’ council and the various working committees for organizing this event; their hard work achieved through the invaluable lessons of “Team – Work” would, he was sure, stand them in good stead for their future development.

Sunway College Ipoh located in Sunway City Ipoh, an integrated resort township in Tambun, is a part of the Sunway Education Group and was established with the aim of extending quality educational programmes outside the Klang Valley.

Commencing operations in 2003 with just a few programmes, Sunway College Ipoh today offers a range of academic programmes ranging from the Cambridge A-Level, LCCI, CAT and ACCA professional accounting qualifications, to diploma programmes specialising in Accounting, Business Administration, Business Information Systems, Marketing, Graphic Design and Interior Design.

Diploma Qualifications

Pre-University Studies

The Cambridge A-Level qualification is the preferred requirement for admission into top-tiered universities the world over because of its rigorous and challenging curriculum that develops good academic skills which prepares students for success in their university studies. The reputation and global recognition accorded to the Cambridge A-Level qualification is attributed to its track record of more than 150 years, producing students with strong academic skills that underpin success in university studies, career and enterprise. The A-level programme at Sunway College Ipoh comes under the purview of this very reputable and established international examination board – the University of Cambridge International Examinations (or CIE), which is an integral part of the University of Cambridge.

Mr. Ng Kim Huat, Regional Representative of CIE in Malaysia, shared that the syllabi of subjects in the Cambridge A-Level programme are constantly revised and updated, to keep the contents abreast with current developments. In addition, new syllabi or subjects are continually developed and added from time to time. “The two-prong approach to curriculum building and revision strengthens the rigour and academic standards of the A-Level programme, thus making it a very ‘lively’, current and challenging programme”, said Mr. Ng to Sunway’s lecturers present at the CIE Regional Conference 2009 in Singapore on 29 & 30 October.

CAT/ACCA

The Association of Chartered Certified Ac-countants (ACCA) is recognised and respected as one of the top professional Accountancy programmes globally. An ACCA graduate is regarded as a very qualified professional to effectively manage the financial affairs of a company. At Sunway College Ipoh, school leavers can access the ACCA professional Scheme through the one-year Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme, the vocational qualification designed by ACCA.

Other academic pathways at Sunway College Ipoh include progression into undergraduate studies at Sunway University College located in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya.
