Scaling Mt Kosciuszko - Perak Media Sports & Welfare Club

The Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club created history recently as the first media club to scale Australia’s tallest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko. The party, consisting of 21 club members and led by Datuk Akmar Hisham Mokhles, the press secretary to the prime minister, was in Australia from March 1 to 8.

"One of our objectives was to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2014. The climbers, not only get to climb the mountain, they were the unofficial ambassadors of Malaysia.”

The team took time off to promote Malaysia and Perak by cycling around the city prior to the climb. They were well received by Melburnians, which consisted of many former Malaysians.

Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak on the Australian continent, stands at a height of 2228 metres (7310 ft) above sea level. It is located in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. According to Akmar, Mount Kosciuszko is listed as one of the mountains in seven continents to scale, if one wants to be called a mountaineer.

"The successful ascent of Mt Kosciuszko is an invaluable experience for the climbers. Besides it being a healthy pursuit, the outing provides an opportunity for us to be mini ambassadors of the country."
