Sekolah Tenby Wins Third Place

The three-man team from Sekolah Tenby brought pride and honour, not just to Tenby Schools Ipoh but Perak as well, with their outstanding performance at the Mighty Minds National Grand Finals held in Kuala Lumpur recently. The team members spoke eloquently in their presentation of the Zeus Lightning Harvester, which was their answer to the given theme ‘Creative Solutions for Maintaining Sustainability’. For their efforts, they took third place overall, a fitting culmination of all the hard work put in by the boys, Tang Chi Hoe (Form 5), Dhipan Raj Sundram and Victor Ho Jun Jie (both Form 4).

Mighty Minds is an annual event organised by The Star daily and RHB Banking Group for the participation of all Malaysian public and private schools with the first round of competitions held from March through August in the respective states. The Perak State Challenge this year was held in Ipoh Parade on May 17. In the lower secondary category (Forms 1 to 3) SMJK Sam Tet took first place, and in the upper secondary category (Forms 4 and 5), Tenby Schools Ipoh won the right to move on and compete in the National Challenge.

At different levels of the competition, the Tenby boys had to answer questions on current issues and general knowledge in a multiple-choice question challenge. They then had to design, build and present a model based on the given theme, and finally, participate in a buzzer quiz round of questioning. Chi Hoe, Dhipan and Victor showed creativity and ingenuity in their design of the lightning harvester as their idea turned out to be very different from the focus of many of the other schools. The boys proved, without a doubt, that with some hard work and a degree of confidence, they can achieve top three placing in a national competition of intelligence and innovation. They have indeed set the bar high for subsequent Tenby teams to reach and surpass.

Congratulations to Chi Hoe, Dhipan and Victor! A job well done!
