Orchestral Delights

It was full house at the Ipoh Town Hall on Thursday, November 13, when music lovers came together for an evening of music. Presented by BP Healthcare Group, the performance, themed Orchestral Delights, was a collaborative project by the Malaysian and Penang Philharmonic Orchestras.

The two orchestras, comprising 80 musicians of 25 nationalities including three 10-year-olds, embarked on a series of concerts and outreach programmes in November in northern Peninsular Malaysia, and Ipoh was one of their stops.

With Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Resident Conductor Cairán McAuley in the lead, the repertoire for the evening was a blend of Western classical masterpieces and local traditional music by the gamelan group from Universiti Teknologi Petronas.

The orchestras enthralled the appreciative audience with a musical splendour that included Mozart’s Symphony No. 39, Strauss’ Emperor Waltz, Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Popular local tunes, namely Tanah Pusaka, Pahlawanku and Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza’s hit Cindai, were performed in between.

The feast of musical pleasures was made even more memorable when BP Healthcare Group presented donations to a number of local non-profit organisations and schools as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility effort. A total sum of RM36,000 was handed out to 11 organisations.

Guests-of-honour were HRH Raja Dihilir Perak Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Sultan Idris Shah and his consort HRH Raja Puan Muda Perak Tunku Soraya Sultan Abdul Halim.
