Sourcing for Fresh Talents

The Department of Arts and Culture Perak held a dance festival recently with the objective of sourcing for fresh talents with the potential to represent the state at national-level competitions.

The event, opened to the public between the ages of 18 to 35, was divided into two categories. The Traditional Dance Category had ten teams participating while the Street Dance Category, eight teams. The competition began at 9am in the morning.

The participants were judged on their movements, facial expressions, showmanship and how well they performed as a team.

Guest-of-honour and Adun for Manong, Mohamad Kamil bin Shafie, told Ipoh Echo that he was overjoyed to see so many youths taking part in the festival. He was pleased that they were taking part in a healthier and beneficial activity rather than wasting time with their smartphones.

“I believe the programme would not only provide the youths the opportunity to showcase their dancing talents but it would also help develop our country’s rich heritage,” said Shafie in his opening remarks.

The 2014 dance festival ended with the award-giving ceremony. Bakes from the Royal Malaysian Navy was the winner in the Traditional Dance Category while Blazin Squad was the champion of the Street Dance Category. Both teams did an encore to the delight of the approving audience.

Festival Tari Malaysia is an annual dance event organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture since 1992. Until 1999 the festival was only opened to professional dancers. Beginning from 2000, the Ministry decided to allow public participation, widening its scope to encompass amateur groups throughout the country.
