Musical Vignettes

After a year’s hard work, SMK (P) Methodist Ipoh (MGS) staged its inaugural musical concert, “A Night of Musical Vignettes” for two nights from Friday, September 2 at the auditorium of the Perak Department for Culture and Arts. Featuring students and guest artistes, a musical vignette is defined as a short impressionistic performance that focuses on one moment that evokes meaning through music, song and dance. The money collected will be channelled towards renovating the school library.

The extravaganza kicked off with musical ensemble from the Institute of Teacher Education playing songs of yesteryear such as “Hotel California” with a combination of traditional and modern instruments. Bahtera Music Production, made up of final-semester music students of the same institute, put up a live band performance at the end of the concert. Their rendition of “Flashlight” was a great hit with the crowd.

A solo by student Anis Maisarah followed. She gave  Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza’s numbers a powerful vocal rendition. Then, the 32-member award-winning MGS choir rendered three songs, a cappella entitled “ondeh ondeh”, “mo li hua” (jasmine) and “the lion sleeps tonight”.

Dancers from the school’s cultural club charmed the audience with their choreography of latin sway and mambo, enhanced by colourful feather boas. Next was a student duo who played “Bright” by Echosmith with their cajon and acoustic guitar.

The night of thrills continued as the stage was shaken by K-pop dancers from D’ Justice. The audience cheered the piece by the Indian Culture Centre who optimised the use of classical drum and trumpet from Southern India. The soulful voice of the lead singer from “The Lost Outcast” was especially mesmerising.

It was amazing to see how the flute player Sarang Art Hub, a music group from Tanjung Malim weaved his music throughout the performance. The night came to an eventful conclusion with the hip-hop steps from Wolfclxn.

There was no better way to unwind on a Friday night than here.
