Artist to Watch: Lukman Hakim

Concluding our exclusive interview series of Perakean artists from the Nando’s Art Initiative is a one-on-one with Lukman Hakim bin Mohd Bahari who turns his passion in fine art from hobby to career.

The creation of the 21-year-old from Gerik titled, ‘Looking Down on New York City’, was shortlisted in the fine art category of the Nando’s Art Initiative 2017. “It was my second participation. Thank God my artwork was selected for the exhibition and sold! In 2016, my work was shortlisted in the top 50,” he enthused.

On his black and white cityscape of New York City, Lukman explained, “I emphasised on charcoal and graphite quality as it is an expressive medium with a good range of light to dark shades. I’m interested in the perspective of a building and is persistent in detailing it to perfection. Assembling part by part and constructing a complex structure inside out are no easy tasks as it takes many experiments and try-outs.”

After high school, he obtained a diploma in fine art from UiTM Seri Iskandar and is currently studying for his bachelor in the same course at UiTM Shah Alam. The tools he works with are pencil and charcoal. “I can create every detail with this medium,” he said.

Citing his lecturers as his mentors and ‘The Starry Night’ by Van Gogh as his favourite masterpiece, he added, “Kit King and Amron Omar are my inspirations”.

When asked why is art so important for the times we’re living in, he replied, “Easy! The earth without art is just ‘eh’”. And here’s his advice for aspiring artists just starting out: “Never give up. Passion is the pillar for success”.
