Befrienders Ipoh. Training for New Hotline Volunteers (7-8 Sep 2019)

Befrienders Ipoh Organises a Public Training for Hotline Volunteers

Suicide is a complex issue which involves the interplay of a variety of psychological, biological, social, cultural and environmental factors. Research studies have repeatedly shown that social isolation can increase the risk of suicidal and conversely that having strong human bonds can be protective against it.

According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2017: Adolescent mental Health (DASS-21) revealed that the prevalence of depression among adolescents between 13 to 17 years old recorded a staggering 5581 out of 30,496 students or 18.3 per cent. It is expected to be the second biggest health problem affecting Malaysians after heart disease by 2020.

In recognition of the seriousness of this issue, Befrienders Ipoh will be organising a Training Programme for Hotline Volunteers, opened for the public too. It also serves as a platform for mental health practitioners, caregivers, volunteers from NGOs and other like-minded people to gather, network and share information and learn approaches in relation to suicide prevention. The programme will be conducted in English.

Befrienders Ipoh is a non-profit, voluntary service organisation that provides free and confidential emotional support/befriending to those who are suicidal, depressed or in despair. The service is provided by trained volunteers via telephone. The aim is to help reduce the risk of suicide in the community.

Befrienders Ipoh has been serving the community since the year 1976. Our service runs from 4pm to 11pm every day at Hotline 05 547 7933 and 05 547 7955. Individuals who are patient listeners and want to do some meaningful for society can join Befrienders Ipoh. Do call 012 534 0063 to register.
