Man Claimed Trial Over a Sexual Offence Charge

A man claimed trial over a sexual offence charge at the Ipoh Sessions/Magistrate Court today (July 30).

The accused, K. Ravichandran, 53, pleaded not guilty in front of Judge Priscilla Hemamalini.

According to the fact sheets of the case, he was charged with allegedly molesting a girl aged 10 (now 12) at the time the offence was committed while she was on her way home from school at Taman Pinji Ria, which was between 1pm to 1.25pm on August 6, 2019.

If convicted, the accused will be subject to punishment under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), which carries imprisonment of up to 20 years and is also liable to whipping. He is also subject to police surveillance for up to three years.

The court ordered for a RM4,000 bail with one surety and fixed September 24 this year for mention.

The case was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Waffy Ismail, while the accused was represented by lawyer Datin K Shamini.
