Three trucks, and four hours to clean illegal garbage

By: Zaki Salleh

TAIPING – An excavator and three lorries with seven workers are needed to clear the area of illegal garbage at Taman Pengkalan Cemerlang here.

The cleaning work took four hours because the garbage truck had to go back and forth six times from the location to the garbage disposal site in Matang.

It all stems from the irresponsible attitude of a few local people who take the easy way of throwing away rubbish.

Such an attitude not only pollutes the area but is also feared to be the cause of disease including becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Before this last Saturday, it went viral on social media about the sight of garbage such as plastic, food containers and bottles in the area at Taman Pengkalan Cemerlang.

For Taiping resident Mona Lisa Jefery, the swift action of the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) to clean up the area is commendable.

She said that such things happen because of the dirty attitude of the residents who do not care about cleanliness.

“It’s hard to say whether it’s locals or foreigners who litter because similar things happen a lot.

“They take it for granted because they know there will be parties doing the cleaning work,” she said.

Strict action is recommended by a resident, Meor Rezal Meor Ahmadi so that those who are punished become a lesson.

“The enforcement party should think about stricter enforcement measures, place spies to arrest the perpetrators,” he said.

Meanwhile, MPT in a statement hopes that the surrounding residents will stop piling garbage in the area and manage the garbage properly.

He said, a door-to-door garbage collection service was provided three times a week and a RORO garbage bin was placed at Pasar Taman Kaya.
