PANGKOR – Efforts to further strengthen the commercial aspects and economic value of Pangkor Island were taken by the Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) when it established the Tax-Free Island Management Unit (UPPBC).

This unit was established in July last year with nine staff members.

Director of UPPBC, Nadiah Mohd Saruan said, the unit’s function is for the promotion and development of Pangkor Island as a duty-free island.

She said, in terms of promotion, the main task is to carry out any form of promotion that can introduce the tourism products of Pangkor Island.

“Among them are handicrafts, food products, culture, the beauty of the beach, historical remains to unique transport (pink vans), places to stay and water sports.

“Promotional activities also involve events and programs at the state to international level such as cultural, food and sports festivals.

“As for the development aspect, in line with the upgrading of Pangkor Island as a duty-free island, development must complement that status,” she said.

Nadiah also explained that efforts to upgrade infrastructure and facilities for tourists are actively being carried out in order to attract more investors.

For that she said, the comfort and convenience of the local people should not be neglected because, in the end, the benefits must be returned to them.
