IPOH – The Mineral and Geoscience Department of Malaysia (JMG) achieved remarkable success by being named the winner of the Chief Minister’s Innovation Award (AIMB).

Operating under the moniker “EUREKA Group,” JMG claimed the coveted title along with a cash prize of RM50,000 and an accompanying trophy.

The innovation they presented involves sustainable technology for greening the Earth through the recycling of carbide lime waste to produce low-impact calcium carbonate, known as precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), for use as a filler material in commercial paint production.

This innovation is a method for converting industrial waste, specifically acetylene gas industry byproduct carbide lime, into high-grade synthetic limestone. PCC can be applied across various industries, including paint, paper, plastics, coatings, and more.

Through this innovation, industrial waste has been upcycled into reusable mineral resources, ensuring the continued preservation of the environment.

Earlier, the award presentation and ceremony were presided over by the Chief Minister of Perak, Dato’ Seri Saarani Mohamad, during the Perak State-Level Innovation Day Celebration in 2023.

This event was further enriched by an exhibition featuring participation from 30 departments, showcasing a wide array of innovations developed and implemented by participants.
