Dementia Workshop This Friday

By KT Leong

Caring for those living with dementia is no easy task. There’s no real manual on what to do because every person living with dementia has specific needs, and finding support or advice can be a real challenge.

So for those dealing with this difficult situation, mark your calendars for this Nov 17 (Friday), as there will be a Positive Approach to Care (PAC) certified workshop at BebeLEC Day Centre on 56, Jalan Lang, 30000 Ipoh, from 11 pm to 1 pm, which will focus on the topic of Determining Dementia & Using Hand-Under-Hand skills.

This workshop will be headed by independent trainer, Calvin Chong, who is a Teepa Snow certified trainer in PAC, and he will be supported by Emily Wong, a practitioner of PAC.

Both Calvin and Emily are also frequent supporters of Bougainvillea City Dementia Cafe (BCDC), which is a monthly support group by those who are dealing directly with people living with dementia, for those caregivers and people living with dementia. It’s a grassroots support group and not some impassioned academic project. Calvin is also a committee member of the Dementia Cafe “Persatuan Kesedaran Demensia Ipoh”.

Among the objectives of this workshop are to help caregivers of people living with brain change (dementia) to identify what works and what doesn’t work, by understanding and learning how to determine dementia, the states of dementia and the Positive Physical Approach as well as the Hand-Under-Hand skills developed by Teepa Snow for daily care.
