MUALLIM: A married couple sustained severe injuries when the motorcycle they were riding collided with the rear of a lorry changing lanes at kilometre (KM) 363.8 on the North-South Expressway heading north here on Wednesday.

Muallim District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Hasni Mohd Nasir, stated that the motorcycle riders, identified as Mohamad Nor Ekhsan Md Puat, 31, and passenger Tengku Balkis Tengku Zainal Rasid, 31, residing in Shah Alam, Selangor, were involved in the accident.

He said they received a call at 11:56 am regarding the accident involving two vehicles, a Hino lorry, and a Yamaha MT-09 motorcycle.

“An investigation and conversation recordings revealed that on January 10th, around 10:30 am, a 34-year-old man was driving the lorry from Kota Damansara to Ipoh via the expressway.

“When reaching KM363.8, the lorry driver was in the left lane among two lanes, then he changed lanes to the right to overtake the vehicle in front of him.

“Suddenly, a motorcycle rider from the same direction couldn’t brake in time and avoid, colliding with the right rear of the lorry,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mohd Hasni stated that as a result of the collision, the motorcycle rider suffered head injuries and fractures in both right and left arms, while the passenger sustained facial injuries.

However, he mentioned that the lorry driver did not suffer any injuries.

“Both victims, who are a married couple, were taken to Slim River Hospital by ambulance.

“The cause of the accident is due to the lorry changing lanes and being struck by the motorcycle from behind,” he added.

Furthermore, both vehicles were seized for inspection by the Computerized Vehicle Inspection Center (Puspakom).

The case is classified under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
