A baby elephant dead after being struck near Gerik

GERIK: A baby elephant was found dead after being hit in an accident involving two vehicles at Kilometer 50 of the East-West Highway between Gerik and Jeli yesterday.

The incident, which happened around 8:30 PM, involved a female baby elephant that was approximately seven years old.

The Chief of Police of Perak, Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, said the accident involved a Nissan X-Trail SUV and a Perodua Viva.

He explained that the Nissan X-Trail, traveling from Kelantan towards Gerik, collided with a crossing elephant.

“The Perodua Axia then rear-ended the Nissan X-Trail.

“The accident caused damage to both vehicles; however, there were no injuries to passengers or drivers,” he said here today.

The elephant carcass was subsequently handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) for further action.
