MANJUNG: A total of six residential areas and 11 dog owners have been investigated by the Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) this year regarding dog bite cases.
This data was released by the Infectious Disease Control Unit (CDC) of the Manjung District Health Office.
The surveillance of dog bites and stray animal cases was carried out as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of rabies transmission.
The MPM’s Strategic Communication and Public Relations Department reported that between March and May, 16 dog bite cases involving stray dogs were reported.
These incidents occurred in residential areas in Seri Manjung, Sitiawan, Ayer Tawar, Pantai Remis, and Lumut.
“This record is based on the surveillance conducted by the CDC of the Manjung Health Office, dated June 11, 2024, which has been submitted for preventive action by MPM and the Manjung District Veterinary Department.
“To address this issue, MPM has carried out various control and monitoring operations to reduce the risk of infectious disease spread and ensure the safety of the community, including children,” the statement said.
According to the data, 51 dog bite cases have been reported to MPM for action to be taken.
MPM emphasized that actions taken are in accordance with the established procedures.
The council also acknowledged the growing population of stray dogs in the area.
“This situation has raised concern and worry among the local community, particularly in the Manjung district.
“However, any action we take follows the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
“We have also initiated the establishment of a Stray Animal Management Unit to enforce the Small Animal and Livestock Stray Laws 2013.
“This involves complaints regarding stray dogs, as well as livestock such as cows, goats, chickens, and pets such as cats, and other animals,” the statement added.
