Man Arrested for Harvesting Cockles Without License

IPOH: A local man was arrested for illegally harvesting cockles without a valid license near 2.0 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Sangga Besar, Kuala Kurau.

Kuala Kurau Maritime Zone Deputy Operations Director, Lieutenant Maritime Syuhadha Sharip, said the man was apprehended following a public tip-off.

“The arrest was carried out by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Kuala Kurau Maritime Zone, early Saturday morning,” he said.

“A Local Fishing Vessel (VNT) using a drift net and a man onboard were detained on suspicion of illegally harvesting cockles.

“The man was found operating without a valid license and outside the permitted hours. During the incident, he presented an expired license, and further inspection revealed that he had harvested 10 kilograms of cockles,” he added.

The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act and Fisheries (Recovery and Culture of Cockles) Regulations 2002 for harvesting cockles with an expired license and operating outside the designated hours.
