Chemical smells around Simpang Pulai disrupts daily activities of local residents

By Aida Aziz

IPOH: The smell of chemicals lingering around Kampung Sengat, Kampung Baru Simpang Pulai, and Bandar Seri Botani has frequently disrupted the daily lives of residents in the area.

According to Gopeng Member of Parliament, Tan Kar Hing, the issue has been ongoing for a long time and has been raised with the relevant authorities multiple times.

However, he said, no concrete solution has been found to put an end to the strange smell.

“Once again, I detected a strange chemical smell around Kampung Sengat, Kampung Baru Simpang Pulai, and Bandar Seri Botani, as well as nearby areas.

“It could be smelled when I was returning from Kuala Lumpur and approaching the Simpang Pulai toll.

“This air pollution issue has been reported numerous times to the relevant authorities, and almost every time I return from Kuala Lumpur, I smell the same odor,” he said.

He added that stronger action will be taken and an announcement will be made soon.

“Myself, along with Simpang Pulai State Assemblyman Wong Chai Yi and the residents, will take more aggressive action regarding this matter.

“You can’t just do as you please without considering the health of the residents. But I will not let this continue, and I will find out who is responsible,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the comments section, most local residents agreed with the concerns raised by Kar Hing.

They said the chemical smell is noticeable between 7 p.m. and midnight, and in the early morning.

“This has been happening for years. When night falls, the strange smell appears,” said one Facebook user.

“It has been going on for a long time, YB (Yang Berhormat). It’s getting worse, especially after rainy weather,” another individual said.
