IPOH: Green Energy Asia Biofuel Resources (GEA) has extended its partnership with the Ipoh City Council (MBI) for another two years as a strategic partner in advancing the circular economy.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Biovisma GEA founder, Mervyn Chong, and Mayor of Ipoh, Zamakhshari Hanipah.

GEA serves as MBI’s strategic partner in recycling used cooking oil into biofuel and biodiesel.

GEA’s Head of Business Development, Muhammad Aswad Abdul Rashid, stated that the partnership will now run until 2027.

He explained that GEA and MBI aim to further enhance the circular economy, while also promoting more sustainable methods for disposing of used cooking oil.

“Over the past two years, GEA has collected 500 tonnes of used cooking oil, including from residential areas, with RM1.7 million paid out.

“To date, 2,000 registered business premises in Ipoh have committed to the used cooking oil recycling initiative.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility efforts, GEA is also working to develop facilities and infrastructure for collecting grease trap waste, a widespread issue for local authorities nationwide,” he said.

As part of the next phase of the collaboration, GEA will work with MBI to develop a digital application to make it easier for the public to dispose of used cooking oil.

Muhammad Aswad noted that the app will not be limited to used oil disposal but will also support the recycling of other materials.

“This app is a joint initiative between MBI and all strategic partners to further drive and simplify circular economy activities in Ipoh, and ultimately increase the collection of used cooking oil,” he added.
