Letter: Stray Dog Poisoning

By S. Param

It’s heartbreaking to learn of the frequent reported incidents of stray dogs and cats poisoning in the country.

The recent poisoning incidents of stray dogs and cats in two popular international destinations in Penang and Langkawi has somewhat tarnished the image of the country globally.

Animal rights groups and citizens are outraged with these blatant illegal use of dangerous substances to poison peaceful and harmless creatures sharing the space with humans.

The public demands the relevant authorities to view these stray poisoning incidents seriously. In the past there were several such incidents however despite all the probes by the authorities but no one was taken to task.

Questions are now being raised as to the competence and seriousness of the investigating authorities.

Despite being blessed with all the necessary resources and technological tools, it’s disappointing to note the relevant authorities have yet to charge any individuals for the horrendous crime of poisoning harmless strays that are protected by the Animal Act.

The rampant poisoning of harmless strays is a wake up call for animal lovers to join hands to demand justice as stipulated under the Animal Act.

Strays are living breathing souls who feel pain, fear, joy and love. They may not have a home but have every right to live with safety and dignity in the spaces in our environment.

When these creatures that live in our midst are harassed and subjected to cruel poisoning and harassment, it’s a failure of humanity and should concern each and everyone of us.

On behalf of all animal lovers I urge the authorities to view the stray poisoning incidents seriously. The easy availability of dangerous poisonous substances in the open should be viewed with concern by the relevant authorities.

Imagine if such potent poison ended up contaminating our food and water resources.

I appeal on behalf of animal lovers in the country to the relevant authorities to view the sudden surge of stray poisoning seriously and take the necessary preventative actions to safeguard the harmless and peaceful creatures in our midst.
