Pickleball for everyone at YMCA Ipoh

by KT Leong

The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Ipoh will be holding their inaugural YMCA Pickleball Tournament on 2 August 2025 (Saturday) at the YMCA of Ipoh at 211, Jalan Raja Musa Aziz (Anderson Road), 30300 Ipoh. Players will register their attendance at 6.30 am on the day, with the tournament starting at 7 am and estimated to conclude by 1 pm for lunch and refreshments. YB Jenny Choi will also be a guest of honour to the event.

YMCA Ipoh’s pickleball courts are the result of the successful implementation of converting part of their tennis courts into pickleball courts, which was brought up during their 105th Annual General Meeting earlier this year. Daniel Lim and YB Ngeh Koo Ham were notable in making this project a success.

Sponsored by Spritzer, to whom YMCA Ipoh expressed their profound appreciation, this event will feature 2 categories:

– Open, which is open to any combination of gender per pair
– Above 50, which is also open to any combination of gender per pair

A prize pool of RM2000.00 awaits the winners of the tournament, with RM500.00, RM300.00 and RM200.00 going to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for each category respectively.

Registration for the event will be closed when the target number of participants have been reached, so don’t delay and visit the following Google Docs for your registration:

Or WhatsApp Mr. Bryan Chai, the tournament director at 011-26681234.

A registration fee of RM10 per player is required.

The purpose of this tournament is to help spread pickleball to the masses. This is why there is a category for both Open and Above 50, as pickleball is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.

YMCA is currently charging RM15 per hour per court for use of their outdoor pickleball court, which is a very competitive price at this time. They intend to build a canopy to shield players from the heat, within the next month or two, at which point, the price for using the courts will be increased to RM20 per hour per court. So now is the perfect time for our readers to give the game a try.

In addition, as of today and in a first for Perak, they will also be operating 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. For those who may not have time to play during working hours or want to let off some energy late into the night. The price of using the courts after 7pm will be RM25, which is due to the extra electricity cost for operating the lights.
