By Julian Matthews
Will it help if you think of me
as just another scrambled egg?
Or poached, bleeding choleric
yellow from my poetic head,
a broken dread, the shell of a man
that tread into your pan?
Fish out my bits then, by hand, or roll me
into a soggy, cheesy omelette, or ugly cry
and whisk me into a bitter batter, chilled
overnight, swirled in a skillet the next day
– the non-stick that stuck around.
Coat me with your buttery pain, then spit
into the spatula, stretch me to the edges
of your sanity, flip me browned,
and served with whipped cream,
banana and nutella, honey,
the crêpe I already am.
Revenge can sometimes be a dish
best served warm.
First published in the literary journal Masticadores Canada.
