Kannaas Bamboo Masala Briyani Opens New Outlet in Ipoh

By Anne Das
Kannaas Bamboo Masala Briyani (KBMB) has arrived in Sunway City Tambun. Once a viral sensation, bamboo briyani has long since proven its staying power as a regional favourite in Malaysia and beyond. Pioneers in the field, Kannaas first brought it to Ipoh back in 2017 and have now opened a new outlet right here. With branches already in Johor and Puchong, this team clearly knows what they are doing, and it shows.

The star attractions are the Bamboo Masala Briyani and the Claypot Sattisorru. The briyani arrives steaming from bamboo tubes, fragrant with spice and ghee. A chicken portion is RM15.90 and big enough for two light eaters, with mutton, prawn, and vegetarian versions also available.
Equally tempting is the Claypot Sattisorru, where rice is sautéed with onions, curry leaves, tomatoes, and masala in one pot to create deep and savoury layers. It comes in chicken, mutton, prawn, or vegetarian, priced between RM13.50 and RM19. Both of these dishes are served daily for lunch and dinner and are the main reason people return again and again.

For early risers, Kannaas offers one of the best value breakfasts around. Idli, thosai, puri, roti canai, and nasi lemak with a fiery sambal are paired with coffee or tea for under RM10. In today’s Ipoh, that is affordable. As owner DS V. Shan puts it, “We focus on fresh produce, healthy cooking, and keeping prices within reach so the community can enjoy good food every day.” Students and retirees, this could be your next gathering spot.

By lunch the place fills with the comfort of banana leaf dining. A spread of vegetables, curries, and meats awaits, cooked in generous portions. The flavours are homely and best enjoyed the traditional way, eaten with your fingers, with rasam and yoghurt to balance the meal.

After a heavy meal, a hot coffee or tea is a must. Order their masala tea or a cup of BRU coffee, then end on something sweet. The desserts are delicious. The bright orange kesari is soft, buttery and lightly spiced, while a sticky rice dessert brings the same homely charm. Both are simple, satisfying, and the perfect finish.

The Sunway Tambun outlet is cosy and family friendly, with clean loos, friendly service, and much needed air conditioning, a real bonus on sweltering Ipoh afternoons. Parking is ample, though paid, and it is tucked in a part of Sunway where food choices have always been thin.

Now you can pop in for a quick thosai in the morning, a briyani feast at lunch, or dinner with family. This is a place that delivers flavour without fuss.
