MBSP Delegation Visits Papan Ulu Johan Sanitary Landfill to Study Renewable Energy Technology

By Rosli Mansor Ahmad Razali

Ipoh – A 21-member delegation from the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) conducted a working visit to the Papan Ulu Johan Sanitary Landfill in Mukim Belanja, Perak, to explore initiatives in solid waste management and renewable energy.

The visit was led by MBSP Director of Municipal Services, Ahmad Zabri Mohamed Sarajajudin, along with Ipoh City Council (MBI) Director of Public Works, A’zman Mohd Harun, and MBSP councillors.

A key highlight of the visit was the 2MW biogas-based Renewable Energy Plant developed by Teraju Sepadu Sdn. Bhd., with support from MBI concessionaire, Selekta Spektra Sdn. Bhd. The plant converts methane gas from decomposing organic waste into electricity, which is then channelled into the national grid.

The initiative not only supports the country’s renewable energy agenda but also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change.

The MBSP delegation also inspected the gas well piping system installed at the landfill cells, which have now reached 95% of their capacity.

The Papan Ulu Johan landfill was developed in accordance with Level 4 Landfill standards, the highest tier of sanitary landfill technology in Malaysia, as prescribed by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).

It receives an average of 620 tonnes of solid waste daily from MBI’s administrative areas and surroundings. The disposal operations are carried out with comprehensive facilities and strict adherence to environmental standards to prevent soil, air, and water pollution.

The visit is expected to open avenues for knowledge and experience sharing between MBSP and MBI in sustainable solid waste management and the implementation of renewable energy technology.
