RM5.4 Billion Allocated for 22 Water Projects in Perak

By Aida Aziz

TAIPING: The government has allocated RM5.4 billion for the implementation of 22 water-related projects in Perak, consisting of 20 continuation projects and two new ones.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, five Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) plans have been completed, while one is currently being implemented.

“These involve various stakeholders with the aim of ensuring clean water availability, reducing flood risks, and protecting water sources.

“This reflects the Federal Government’s commitment through PETRA and the state government in meeting the needs of the people of Perak.

“It also strengthens efforts in sustainable and integrated river conservation and restoration,” he said.

However, he added that even though Malaysia is blessed with 189 major river basins, including 11 in Perak, it means little if river quality is not maintained.

“The latest report from the Department of Environment shows that 27 rivers in Malaysia are still polluted.

“This statistic serves as a reminder and warning to us all. River pollution does not happen naturally.

“Instead, it is caused by human behavior, such as waste disposal, illegal industrial activities, and failure to comply with environmental regulations,” he said further.

He was speaking at the 2025 National World Rivers Day (WRD) celebration held at Sungai Batu Tegoh, Padang Merbok here today.

Meanwhile, he said the National River Trail Program (DSK) is one of the key initiatives to raise awareness about rivers.

It also encourages local communities to act as the government’s eyes and ears by reporting any pollution-related activities.

He explained that PETRA, through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, has allocated RM1.05 million for the construction of DSK in Perak.

“With DSK, this location not only becomes a recreational area but also has the potential to generate local economic activity through various initiatives, including eco-tourism,” he said.

At the event, more than 2,000 visitors participated in the celebration themed “Rivers and Streams in Our Community.”

PETRA also officiated the DSK at Sungai Batu Tegoh and presented the Special Water Resources Award to recognize the efforts and contributions of local communities in preserving and sustaining water resources.
