Deepavali is just around the corner, and with it comes an array of mouth-watering desserts and crunchy treats that even the sweetest tooth can’t resist.

For those preparing for open houses and family gatherings, Indira Gandhi, a self-taught baker from Taman Rishah, Ipoh, has been offering handmade festive treats for the past five years through her small business, Mutho & Co Baked Goods & Snacks.

What makes Indira’s baked goods stand out is her flexibility and attention to detail.

Her cookies are customisable, making them ideal for those who prefer eggless options or less-sweet recipes, a feature especially appreciated by older customers and families looking for balanced flavours.

Her products are also among the most affordable in Ipoh, offering quality at accessible prices.

Murukus are sold in several packaging options: a tin of 100 pieces (RM95), a container of 25 pieces (RM28), and a pack of 10 pieces (RM9).

Her best-selling cookies include sugee (made with ghee, or clarified butter), jam tarts, dark chocolate, kacang (peanut), pistachio almond, semperit (butter), cornflake, rose butter, and cashew butter cookies, priced between RM35 and RM40 per jar.

For variety, customers can also choose any three jars for RM100, which amounts to roughly 165 to 180 cookies which is a cost-effective choice for festive sharing.

A common remark from her customers is that her baked goods taste fresh and homemade.

Indira also bakes 1kg butter, marble, and sugee cakes, made with pure butter and no icing for a traditional taste.

For something savoury, she prepares spicy cornflakes, spicy or sweet sippi, and nei urundai (a classic ghee-based treat made with mung bean flour, cardamom, and butter).

Her journey began through the Perak Women for Women (PWW) organisation in Ipoh, where she underwent training to gain business and baking skills.

The programme supports women facing challenges, giving them opportunities to rebuild their livelihoods. Indira credits PWW for helping her find confidence and direction in turning her passion into a sustainable business.

Today, she continues to bake from home together with her PWW team at The PWW Baking Studio.
