If you’ve spent any time along Jalan Lau Ek Ching after dark, you’ll know the scene. Bars line the street, lights glow late into the night, and music spills out from every doorway. It’s Ipoh’s little version of Bangsar, lively and full of regulars who know exactly where to go once the sun sets.
Among the bars that draw the weekend crowd, Shelby Bar & Bistro has become one to watch. It may look familiar to many, and for good reason. This was once History Bistro, founded in 2012 and known for its lively mix of food, beer and games.
Located in a restored pre-war shophouse built in 1965, it became a favourite among locals for its music and late-night camaraderie. With a new name and fresh energy, Shelby is already making noise, quite literally.
The soft opening pulled in a full house, with familiar faces and curious newcomers filling the place till the early hours. DJ Logen, owner of Shelby, was at the helm, kicking off the night before handing the decks to a strong local lineup that included Jim, Double B, Albert, Ajay, Nelson G, DJ V, Mathan and Dobee. Every set built on the last, keeping the crowd on its feet and the vibe unstoppable.
Adding to the buzz were live performances by Dave, Wren, Joni and Jeffrey, bringing that distinct Ipoh touch, a mix of local band energy layered with the pulse of club rhythms. By midnight, the atmosphere was electric. Glasses clinked, laughter rose above the beat and the dance floor filled fast.
Shelby is the kind of place that doesn’t try too hard, and that’s exactly why it works. The layout is open and welcoming, made for people to move, mingle and enjoy themselves. For those who love live bands, there are ongoing performances, a pool table at the back for hustlers, and a friendly team that keeps the drinks coming.
The drinks menu keeps things familiar with draught beers, classic cocktails and easy comfort bites made for late-night appetites. It’s the kind of place where you can kick back with friends, have a few laughs and let your hair down as the night rolls on.
“We’re keeping the energy going with themed nights, guest DJs and festive live bands through November and December,” said DJ Logen. “For anyone looking to unwind without leaving town, Shelby is a solid reason to stay out late and enjoy Ipoh’s nightlife in full swing.”
