IPOH: A total of 465 suspects have been arrested in connection with cable theft cases in Perak from January to October this year.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the thefts involved property belonging to Telekom Malaysia (TM), which has lodged police reports regarding the incidents.

He added that the rising cases of cable theft have caused public concern, especially when manholes are left open, posing a danger to the public.
“The police have arrested 465 individuals for cable theft from January to October 2025, and patrols in identified areas have also been increased,” he said.
Meanwhile, Manjoi State Assemblyman (ADUN), Hafez Sabri, proposed several measures to combat the activity, which require cooperation from TM.
These include stricter penalties on offenders and those protecting the syndicates.

“TM must enforce the removal of unused underground cables, especially copper cables, and make an official announcement to the public that these cables no longer have value or have been disposed of.
“This will stop the perception that the cables can still be stolen and sold. TM can also appoint specialised contractors to systematically remove unused cables.
“Additionally, official announcements through social media, newspapers, or statements from the responsible Exco should be made to assure public safety and curb syndicate activities,” he said.
Hafez added that authorities and the government must thoroughly investigate allegations of parties protecting cable theft syndicates.
“Strict action must be taken, as the boldness of these thieves may stem from protection by certain parties. They have even been reported carrying weapons, posing a threat to public safety.
“Existing laws must be tightened, including increasing fines even for first-time offences, disallowing fine reductions, and making both fines and imprisonment mandatory,” he said.
