By KT Leong

On 6 December, the Plant to 1000 Closing Ceremony at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) was held with strong community participation, marking the culmination of a year-long effort to promote environmental care and sustainability. Gracing the ceremony was YB Steven Tiw Tee Siang, representing YB Teh Kok Lim. In his remarks, he highlighted how the state has faced frequent flooding incidents recently, and emphasised that planting more trees will help reduce erosion, slow down stormwater, and prevent floods in the long term. He encouraged the public to continue planting trees not only for today, but for future generations.

During the event, Prof Dr Muhamad Abdul Aziz Ab. Gani introduced the vision of UiTM towards environmental leadership and sustainability. He shared that UiTM is actively working towards a zero-carbon objective, demonstrating the university’s commitment to carbon reduction, green campus planning and long-term ecological responsibility. He welcomed collaborations such as Plant to 1000 as a meaningful platform that supports their sustainability mission.

2026 President of JCI Ipoh, Oscar Low, also addressed the audience by introducing JCI Ipoh and expressing appreciation to the many individuals who contributed. He thanked everyone who planted a tree, carried soil, watered seedlings, sponsored a tree, or simply attended and supported the initiative, stating that every effort, big or small, made the programme successful.

Many partners were acknowledged for their support. Appreciation was extended to the Perak State Government for its trust and encouragement, to the corporate sponsors Sahabat Ecology, Kawan Energy, and Rimba Tissue Culture Sdn Bhd, as well as all supporting partners. Participating schools including SJKC Guntong, SMK Anderson and SJKC Gunung Rapat were recognised for their enthusiasm and student participation. Community groups, youth volunteers and environmental supporters were also thanked for their involvement. Special recognition was given to the Organising Committee led by William Ooi, supported by directors and members who worked tirelessly throughout the year. UiTM Seri Iskandar was thanked for hosting and collaborating closely in delivering the programme.

The ceremony concluded on a hopeful note, with all parties reaffirming their shared commitment to continue tree planting and environmental action, ensuring a greener and safer future for the community.
