The recent call by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to put a stopper in online racial comments must be echoed and amplified. Sultan Sharafuddin, in his interview with Bernama, did not hold back his punches and labelled such actions as nonsense and aptly so, because it clearly is.
I would like to personally thank the Selangor ruler for his wisdom, instruction and advise. Personally, I have only met the Sultan once in my life, and through my limited but meaningful conversation with him, I knew deep down he is a wise and fair individual.
Many online users, hide behind the mask of anonymity, living under the false pretence, they get away with anything in the name of free speech and then there are those, who are downright evil, who would say anything and still think they get off Scot Free.
The truth is we did not need the Sultan’s reminder, although much appreciated, the simple fact of the matter is that being respectful online is also a reflection of humility and the Malaysian way of life. Differences in opinions must be handled in a matured and civilized way.
My message to all social media users is to be mindful of your words. Please be gents and ladies. Do not be consumed with hate while commenting. Your harsh and rude comments will lead to a vicious cycle and it will ultimately translate to your offline behaviour.
Be courteous, responsible and respectful of others while commenting online.
